Day Trippin’

It’s officially springtime! Everyone can let out that sigh of relief that winter has finally come to a close and we can pack up our heavy winter jackets until next year. Spring is a beautiful season full of warmer weather and blooming flowers.Spring, as beautiful as it is can easily become stressful and parents can become overwhelmed between spring cleaning, coaching little league tee-ball, getting the pool in the back yard ready for summer and so much more. It’s easy for parents to get the “super-mom complex” as described by fellow blogger The Random Path. She discusses how parents can make themselves crazy by finding so many things that have to be done. I’m encouraging all of you super-parents (because all parents are super for just BEING a parent, in my opinion) to take a moment to relax and take a nice local day trip to get away from your worries. With all of these beautiful days this is a great time of year for family day trips to local places. This post is going to be more specific to the Wilmington, Delaware region, but for those of you not in this particular area, feel free to use these ideas to explore other family friendly day trip locations.

Delaware Children’s Museum

Take your young ones to explore Delaware’s first and only children’s museum. It’s packed with interactive learning exhibits that will engage children of all ages. Located on the beautifully updated Wilmington Riverfront.

Blue Rocks Game

This can be applied to any local major or minor league sports team, whatever suits for family’s tastes the best. Venture out to Frawley Stadium also located on the Wilmington Riverfront for an exciting and budget-friendly family affair. Also check out the local riverfront restaurants because some of them offer discounted (or even free) kids meals with Blue Rocks tickets. What a deal!

Philadelphia Please Touch Museum

The Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia is a huge facility dedicated entirely to interactive learning. They have everything from space exhibits, water exhibits and even a full-sized carousel!

Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens is great for both children and adults. Adults will appreciate the beautiful landscaping and lovely flowers while children can enjoy some of the educational programs offered as well as the chance to explore the vast property full of surprises. Local blogger Delaware County Moms recommends visiting the newly renovated Children’s Garden in the Conservatory. It is a lovely labyrinth of shooting water spouts and surprises you surely won’t want to miss.

Camden Adventure Aquarium

Full of adventure and intrigue the Camden Adventure Aquarium is fun for everyone. Make sure you check out their touch exhibits where you can touch and feed gentle sting-rays! Very cool!

The Baltimore National Aquarium

It’s a bit farther from the Delaware County region but certainly worth the drive! The Baltimore National Aquarium has it all! Be sure to get tickets to see the popular dolphin show that runs throughout the day. It’s a performance that never gets old no matter how many times you see it!

The Franklin Institute

Certainly one of my person favorite day trip locations, the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. With traveling exhibits you are sure you find something new with every visit. This museum boasts a 3D theater, a planetarium, and a giant model of a human heart to walk through! You can easily spend all day in here, but if you happen to have more time just take a nice stroll through center city Philadelphia.

Linvilla Orchards

Who wouldn’t want to pick your own blueberries? Linvilla Orchards is a wonderful place to take your family. The best time to go is on the weekend when there are almost always an assortment of family-friendly activities going on. Not only can you pick your own blueberries, but you can hand pick other fruits as well. Linvilla has hayrides, a big playground, and sometimes even pony rides.

The Philadelphia Zoo

America’s first zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo is a fun day trip for everyone. With elephant rides, face painting, swan boats, playgrounds and of course a huge assortment of animals what more could you possibly ask for from a day trip? Make sure you pack sunscreen because you’ll spend a lot of time outside in the sunshine here!
